Growth of fiberform nanostructures on metal surfaces by helium plasma irradiation

نویسندگان

چکیده

Helium plasma irradiation to various metals leads peculiar morphology changes as forming fiberform nanostructures called fuzz when a certain set of conditions is satisfied. In this Tutorial, we overview experimental observations about the growth process, conditions, rate, etc. on tungsten (W), and observed other metals. The mechanism, open questions growth, current understandings these issues are discussed based simulation theoretical works. Several applications (gas sensors photocatalytic application) with shown. We hope that Tutorial will help new researchers in field perform experiments simulations reveal perspectives fuzz.

Creating Metal Nanostructures at Metal Surfaces Using Growth Kinetics

We discuss the structure and size of metal islands formed by atomic-beam deposition onto single crystal metal surfaces. Most of the procedures described can straightforwardly be transferred to oxide and semiconductor substrates. We start with the preparation and stability of the smallest islands, namely single atoms. Isolated and immobile adatoms are formed by deposition at substrate temperatur...

Helium atmospheric pressure plasma jets touching dielectric and metal surfaces

Atmospheric pressure plasma jets (APPJs) are being investigated in the context plasma medicine and biotechnology applications, and surface functionalization. The composition of the surface being treated ranges from plastics, liquids, and biological tissue, to metals. The dielectric constant of these materials ranges from as low as 1.5 for plastics to near 80 for liquids, and essentially infinit...

Ion Irradiation Induced Effects in Metal Nanostructures

High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) are used to study the ion induced effects in Au, Ag nanostructures grown on Si and thermally grown SiO2 substrates. Au and Ag films (∼ 2 nm) are prepared by thermal evaporation under high vacuum condition at room temperature (RT). These films were irradiated with MeV Au ions also at RT. Ver...

Self-assembly of metal nanostructures on binary alloy surfaces.

Deposition of metals on binary alloy surfaces offers new possibilities for guiding the formation of functional metal nanostructures. This idea is explored with scanning tunneling microscopy studies and atomistic-level analysis and modeling of nonequilibrium island formation. For Au/NiAl(110), complex monolayer structures are found and compared with the simple fcc(110) bilayer structure recently...

Fuzzy nanostructure growth on Ta/Fe by He plasma irradiation

In this study, we show from helium (He) plasma irradiation to tantalum and iron surfaces that morphology changes in nanoscale occur on the both metals. In particular, from systematic irradiation experiments, it is identified that fuzzy nanostructures are grown on the both metals. The necessary conditions for the morphology changes are discussed based on the experimental results in terms of the ...
